Symphony No. 36 in C major Linz, K. Adagio, Allegro spiritoso. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Jeffrey Tate. The Symphony No. 36 in C major, K. 425, known as the Linz Symphony was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart during a stopover in the Austrian town of Linz on his and his wife's way back home to Vienna from Salzburg in late 1783. The entire symphony was written in four days to accommodate the local count's announcement, upon hearing of the Mozarts' arrival in Linz, of a concert. The première in Linz took place on 4 November 1783. The composition was also premièred in Vienna on 1 April 1784. The Linz, Prague, and G Minor symphonies are superb. Tate observes most repeats-thus the longer playing times c. f many other conductors. His tempi are unexeceptionable in all three. They sing, especially in s 36 1 and 2, 381 and 2, and all of 40. 36 is given a stately performance with a great balance of fire and elegance. Tate gives No. 40 a warm and romantic view rather than singularly dramatic. In any case, it is a very affecting performance. 41 is easily my favourite performance of this greatest of all symphonies.
