Fans know what to expect from Motörhead and may pass up new offerings from the band in favor of the classics, but dont skip on Aftershock because you might find yourself spinning it more than some. This level of confidence has made Motörhead a timeless institution in the world of rock & roll, and on Aftershock, the band's 21st album, it's clear they're not even close to running out of gas. While the band's elemental sound doesn't show much in the way of innovation, the spirit of true rock is so strong within it that it doesn't really matter. So is Aftershock the ultimate Motörhead album Probably not. Ace of Spades is legendary for a reason, and lesser-known efforts from 1986's quirky yet vicious Orgasmatron to 2004's mighty Inferno deserve places near the top of the canon. But taken on its own terms, the LP is deeply satisfying and frequently thrilling. Aftershock does have its pedestrian moments. Even allowing for the Sunset Strip lasciviousness that's an integral part of the late-period Motörhead aesthetic, Crying Shame-with its piano-accented refrain and C'mon, mama, get down on your knees exhortation-still comes uncomfortably close to Great Whitestyle cheese.
