On The Road Drink beer from your shoe, duct tape yourself to a small, sweaty man and have your mind eaten by a trio of Israeli rock monsters. Those used to be the reasons to see Monotonix live, but now you can do it all in your own living room. Just an EP-sized sip of the -Tonix, so you don't seriously injure yourself. Body Language. The image on the cover of Body Language perfectly depicts the sound of Monotonix: a kick drum shooting an explosion of fuzz into the sky. Starting with a single note bashed out for 30 seconds before flipping into a slithering groove, Israel's loudest band fills a six-song EP with fuzzy guitar riffs and explosive drums in a beefed up style of rock & roll that encapsulates the fervor of StoogesMC5 style garage punk along with the powerful riffage of classic rock lords Black Sabbath, Blue. Monotonix were known for setting themselves and their equipment on fire, stealing drinks from audience members to pour on themselves, turning their shows into frenzied dance parties, and, later, for their unique take on raw garage rock. In 2008, the band signed to Drag City and released Body Language. The track was recorded by Tim Green of the Fucking Champs. They never let up on their nonstop touring though, playing over 250 shows that year alone. Where Were You When It Happened, 2009. Body Language has the most headbanging rhythm and conspicuous guitar licks on the EP, but it also throws in a cascading piano riff over the song's tricky turnaround that goes a long way to color the track, and keeps the record itself from getting too homogeneous. The descending guitar line that follows is sweet and yearning enough to fit onto a damn Strokes record It's a hell of a hodgepodge that makes its four minutes seem epic, and it all flows seamlessly.
