Live at the It Club is a Thelonious Monk album released posthumously by Columbia Records. Recorded October 31 and November 1, 1964 at the It Club in Los Angeles, California, the album features Monk's quartet performing original compositions as well as jazz standards. The album was first issued in 1982 as a double-LP entitled Live At The It Club. In 1998, ColumbiaLegacy Records reissued the album as a double-CD set entitled Live At The It Club-Complete that includes virtually all of the band's. This pair of 1964 dates at the It Club feature the pianist with tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse, bassist Larry Gales, and drummer Ben Riley, as usual, concentrating almost exclusively on his own works. The band is in terrific form, with Monk clearly stimulated by the tightness of his rhythm section and Rouse's strong playing. Album 1964 17 Songs. Well, You Needn't Live. Anyone looking for their first live Monk albums need to head straight to Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall and the Complete Live at the Five Spot 1958 with Johnny Griffin as those sets are legendary and show Monk mentoring two saxophone titans who could spar with him. By 1964, Monk was done with that role, and Charlie Rouse does not spark the sort of back and forth that result in songs like the version of Sweet and Lovely on that Coltrane set, which is one of my favorite live moments of ANY live jazz album by ANYBODY.
