Monika Kruse stakes a claim to female techno power with CHANGES OF PERCEPTION. With collaborator Gregor Tresher, she eases from one track to another, from the spare intro "Alo" to the more melodic "Don't Come Close." The album overall hews close to a more minimal vision of techno, though not as minimal as, say, M_nus. Instead, the production is spare with some fun bits, like the wobble on the title track. Kruse will occasionally insert her voice into the proceedings, like the fragment on "When I Woke Up," but it's the percussion that stands front-and-center on that track. Even better yet are the vocal samples on "Morgana," which build to a kind of chorus. "So Hum" ends the album on a beatless note, which nonetheless fits in with its general surroundings. Nice.
