With Sympathy is the debut studio album by American rock band Ministry, released on May 10, 1983 by Arista Records. The group was formed in 1981 by lead singer and multi-instrumentalist Al Jourgensen, with drummer Stephen George being the most notable member of its initial lineup. In late 1981, Jourgensen was living in Chicago and involved in its underground scene. He began to write and record songs in his apartment, using a newly-bought ARP Omni synthesizer, a drum machine, and a reel-to-reel tape. The album was released in 1983 through Arista Records, with Ministry's members at the time being Alain Jourgensen and Stephen George. Singer Jourgensen was supposedly pressured into making the album in the synthpop style by Arista management, which is in contrast to the harder sound he developed as his career continued. However, there are several reports of Jourgensen saying in the eighties how he discovered hardcore punk, which changed his musical direction, and became ashamed of putting out the album. He adopts a faux-British accent, once again supposedly on command from management. Graphically described by Jourgensen as an abortion of an album, Ministry was pressured by their Arista label to release a synthpop record in order to capitalize on a trend Or so Alain would have us believe. Rather than the trademark bone-munching industrial metal of later years, With Sympathy is panto-goth new wave synth-pop that sounds less like the band chewing your pancreas and more like Human League's surly little brother.
