Info
The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is a studio album by American jazz musician Charles Mingus, released on Impulse Records in 1963. The album consists of a single continuous composition-partially written as a ballet-divided into four tracks and six movements. The album was recorded on January 20, 1963 by an eleven-piece band. Mingus has called the album's orchestral style ethnic folk-dance music. Mingus's perfectionism led to extensive use of studio overdubbing techniques. The album features liner. The album consists Review by Steve Huey. The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is one of the greatest achievements in orchestration by any composer in jazz history. Charles Mingus consciously designed the six-part ballet as his magnum opus, and - implied in his famous inclusion of liner notes by his psychologist - it's as much an examination of his own tortured psyche as it is a conceptual piece about love and struggle. It veers between so many emotions that it defies easy encapsulation for that matter, it can be difficult just to assimilate in the first place. Yet the work soon reveals itself as. This 1963 recording occupies a special place in Mingus's work, his most brilliantly realized extended composition. The six-part suite is a broad canvas for the bassist's tumultuous passions, ranging from islands of serenity for solo guitar and piano to waves of contrapuntal conflict and accelerating rhythms that pull the listener into the musical psychodrama. It seems to mingle and transform both the heights and clichés of jazz orchestration, from Mingus's master, Duke Ellington, to film noir soundtracks. The first LP I ever bought was The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. A girl in a coffee shop recomemded it to me. I listened to it every night for a year. Album 1963 4 Songs. The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. Charles Mingus would be a man who many would consider to be a true artist. As 20th century musicians go, Mingus is widely considered to be among the greatest composers of his time. In addition to this, his triumphs as an orchestrator and musical technician catapult him into the upper echelons of, dare I say, legendary status. There is no greater example of this than The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. Written originally as a ballet, this album draws inspiration from everything and everyone from Duke Ellington to Latin-based musical resources, creating a unique, new orchestral style that Mingus dubbed ethnic folk-dance music
