Platinum is the fifth studio album by English multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Mike Oldfield, released on 23 November 1979 on Virgin Records. It was Oldfield's first album to include shorter songs and music written by others. A modified version of the album was released in the United States and Canada and titled Airborn. The In Concert 1980 tour, which ran from April to December of that year, was in promotion of the album. In Germany the album peaked at number 11. The album has since been reissued. The Platinum Collection is a 2006 Virgin Records compilation album written and mostly performed by Mike Oldfield. It contains most of Oldfield's best known work, and some rare mixes of songs that had previously only been available as B-sides to singles. The first two discs are entirely made up of content from Oldfield's Virgin albums, whereas some pieces on disc three are under licence from Warner. Script error. Platinum is the fifth record album by Mike Oldfield, released in 1979 on Virgin Records. The album has since been reissued with bonus material. The first Mike Oldfield album to break from the tradition of a single long composition spread over multiple record sides into 1 long composition over 1 side Platinum Parts 1-4 and several shorter pop-style songs on the other. Part 4 of Platinum subtitled North Star featured an excerpt from the Phillip Glass album also called North Star but converted into progressive rock through the addition of bass, drums and guitars. With this album, Oldfield began to make an attempt to break down his extended structures into a more commercially acceptable format, with the side-long title track being separated into four sections. Early versions of the album included Sally, Oldfield's paean to his partner Sally Cooper, while later pressings include Into Wonderland. Track Listing.
