Shot Forth Self Living is the debut studio album by American rock band Medicine, released on September 15, 1992 on Def American. Jim Goodall drums. Brad Laner vocals, guitar, percussion, piano, production. Jim Putnam guitar. Eddie Ruscha bass guitar, tape, art direction, design. Beth Thompson vocals. Production and additional personnel. Chris Apthorp engineering. John Cevetello engineering on Aruca. Sneaky Pete Kleinow steel guitar on A Short Happy Life and Christmas Song. The opening of Shot Forth Self Living seems to summarize Medicine's entire approach to music: a burst of guitar feedback begins and screeches for longer than one would think tolerable - and then, suddenly, drums and an elephantine bassline emerge and the listener finds that in the midst of all the noise, there's a beautiful pop song slipping through. With The Buried Life, Medicine's path ended up matching contemporaries Curve's to a striking degree like the UK band, Medicine followed up their debut with a stronger second album in 1993 with greater overall variety leading the way. Slut might as well be a Curve homage in itself, with the band finding a perfect mix of Goodall's dance-nodding percussion, Thompson's coolly dismissive singing, and Laner's guitar sounding like a circular saw looping through sheet metal.
