The new reissue of German-born composer Max Richter's Memoryhouse serves as a jolting reminder of just how much classical music has broken outside of its shell and into other realms during the last decade. In January, the German-born composer Max Richter completed a task that had long felt like a dream: He heard the music of Memoryhouse, his first album under his own name, played in front of an audience in a proper auditorium. Memoryhouse may be Max Richter's debut album, but he had been developing his unique mix of contemporary classical and electronics for years before it was released. He co-founded the Piano Circus ensemble, who commissioned and performed works by Arvo Pärt, Brian Eno, Philip Glass, and Steve Reich all of whom were influential on Richter's own music, and used live sampling. He also collaborated with Roni Size and Future Sound of London on their groundbreaking 1996 album Dead Cities. Recorded by Richter with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and critically lauded on its original release, Memoryhouse is quite deservedly held very dear to the broad-reaching post-classical field. October 2009 will see a long-awaited re-release of this truly beautiful album on FatCat Records instrumentalorchestral imprint 130701. 1 Critical reception
