Originally from Deland, Florida, Johnson moved to Boston, Massachusetts, in the early 1970s. Commercially, the album was a flop although in retrospect, Flaming Starr was creatively ahead of the curve in fusing synthesizers and drum machines with late-'70s funk on excellent tracks like Moving on Up. His second release, 1983's Spacey Lady, relied on a mix of electro-dance tracks, smooth ballads, and more pop-oriented material.
