EitherOr is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith. EitherOr was recorded in several locations, mostly in Portland, Oregon while Smith was still a member of Heatmiser and was produced by Smith, Tom Rothrock and Rob Schnapf. EitherOr was released on February 25, 1997, on the Kill Rock Stars record label, following Heatmiser's dissolution. Book-ended by its two singles, Speed Trials and Ballad of Big Nothing, EitherOr did not chart in the US, but was acclaimed by. The final album in Smiths catalog before the major label-backed XO and Figure 8 , EitherOr marks the last time Smiths instincts would outpace the studio resources to execute them. Elliott Smith is arguably the best solo Acoustic Alternative artist of the last 10 years. What seperates Elliott from his peers Damien Rice, Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake etc is his extremely obvious Beatles and Beach Boys influence. Easily the best song on the album. The lyrics are amazing and Elliott's voice is filled with emotion and he sings beautifully. An organ comes in part way into the song and Elliott sings a simple uh huh line
