Info

Grit is the last studio album by the Scottish Celtic fusion artist Martyn Bennett. It was released on 13 October 2003 on the Real World label. The album had been recorded while he was ill, and he was unable to play his instruments. Bennett brought together samples of unaccompanied traditional Scottish folk singers, his own bagpipe and fiddle playing, with and electronic drum beats. Martyn Bennett: GRIT. GRIT is an album of descriptive music that incorporates many singers that I knew in person or, at least, listened to as I was growing up. The material is split between the North Eastern traditions of travelling people especially Romany gypsy and the Gaelic traditions of the West Highlands because I feel that these two traditions are by far the strongest links to our past culture in Scotland. Some of the tracks have been arranged around an entire performance whilst others only contain fragments. The obscure title means many things to me personally, however it is tied up in my ideas of where Scottish culture lies. Grit by Martyn Bennett, released 13 October 2003 1. Move 2. Blackbird 3. Greg For those who do not know Martyn BENNET : His album is about electronic music based on traditional scottish tunes and lyrics. Title Rant will give you an idea about this album. In memory of this Scottish artist. Favorite track: Rant. First studio album by Martyn Bennett, a very innovative canadian artist. Martyn Bennett had actually been working that territory since his eponymous debut in 1995 but really came into his own in the years since Grit is a tour de force of avant-folk fusion music on which he manages to craft irresistibly hip-shaking beats and bring them to bear on traditional material without sacrificing any of the stark beauty of his source. With Grit, the folk synthesist if that's not a contradiction in terms Martyn Bennett attempts to reclaim Scottish music from the misty-lensed and fanciful representations of Celtic culture that have flourished in recent years. His method is to go back to roots, using samples of traditional Scottish folk singers such as Lizzie Higgins and Flora MacNeil, and his own fiddle and pipe drones alongside modern synth and drum programmes. Remembering Martyn Bennett: The rebirth of Grit. 16 January 2015. The opening night of this years Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow featured a full orchestration of Martyn Bennett's last album, Grit, by cross-genre classical violinist Greg Lawson. Bennett died from cancer in 2005 at the age of 33. We also present a selection of BBC archive performances and inter
