Martha Schlamme was best-known for her interpretations of Jewish folk songs, although her repertory was far wider than that, and embraced music in a dozen languages. For this, her second LP, she returned to a difficult corner of her own past. As a Jewish refugee from Austria, she had avoided much to do with German culture since 1938, but by the early '50s she'd begun a furtive reassessment of the music, which culminated in this album, recorded in collaboration with Pete Seeger. She was born to an Orthodox Jewish family in Vienna, Austria in 1923. In 1954, she recorded the album German Folk-Songs with the then-blacklisted singer Pete Seeger. Aside from this album for Folkways Records, she would later record for the Vanguard, Columbia and MGM labels. Internationally renowned folk artist Martha Schlamme sings German folk songs and is accompanied on recorder and banjo by Pete Seeger. Born in Vienna, Schlamme confesses that bringing the folk literature of her native tongue into her performing repertoire of hundreds of songs spanning fourteen languages was a struggle: Like many other victims of Nazi persecution I found it difficult to sing or think sympathetically of a land which brought back memories of the murder of my people and of those others who dared. to speak out for sanity.
