"This Stabat Mater is serene and meditative, focusing more closely on the spiritual weight of the moment than the drama of human tragedy. The music is full of grief, but is ultimately more transcendent than tragic, suffused, for all its dark clouds, with the light of redemption.
Rosano's writing for Scholl is, not surprisingly, tailored to perfection. He shuns showy ornaments an high tessitura and explores instead Scholl's warm and expressive middle register, uncovering a depth of earthy expression which belies the notion of the countertenor voice as exclusively highly placed and ethereal. The piece may have been composed for Scholl, but it is no mere singer's showcase - the voice is incorporated into an eerie and inventive orchestral texture. The setting of the second and third movements is particularly effective, the short, insistent phrases of "Cuius animam gementem" giving way in "O quam tristis" to extraordinary and hypnotic melismas."
Sarah Noble - The Opera Critic

"Whilst I am not a religious person, hearing this beautiful music and sweet pure voice is somehow a spiritual experience. Mr. Scholl's voice floats effortlessly above the instruments and creates a beautiful legato line at all times. The intonation is perfect and he is fully in control of his vibrato. His pianissimo straight tones are particularly breathtaking; they hover in space as if suspended in time."
Eliza Eggler - Australian Stage

"Rosano's Stabat Mater is testimony that although exhaustively pursued in the distant past, the style adapted in the hands of a modern master is every bit as fresh as when it flowed from the pens of the giants of the baroque. The Stabat Mater melodies are beautiful and the harmonies characteristically lush and full."

"I recently discovered the Stabat Mater from Marco Rosano and sung by Andreas Scholl and downloaded it. It has not left my CD-player and I play it all the time. The music is so beautiful and fits Andreas voice so well that it moves me every time again. It is another pearl in my CD-collection of Andreas! Thank you very much!"
Gonder Pranger - AndreasSchollSociety.org

"Rosano's piece is also a tailor-made vehicle for the sweet notes of Scholl's voice, of which there were quite a few, his velvety lines floating above the instrumental textures in long sustained notes, chant-like melismas or sequential figurations."
