Complete your Gustav Mahler - Bruno Walter, Columbia Symphony Orchestra collection. The Symphony No. 1, Titan, is considered by many to be Gustav Mahler's most accessible work, and this Leonard Bernstein recording is listed at near the top of recommended versions. Being a huge Bernstein AND Mahler fan, and having never heard this particular recording, I decided to give the disc a spin. My impression in the end is a bit mixed. Lenny always seems to be branded in his later years as self-indulgent and leaning too much on very slow tempi. Gordon Holt Dec 31, 2018 First Published: Mar 1, 1963. As far as I'm concerned, it is the best Mahler First that Bruno Walter committed to discs during his lifetime, including the last one that he made with the New York Philharmonic. And the fact that this recording is far superior to that accorded Walter when he conducted the New York Philharmonic does not detract one bit from my feeling about this new release. CD Album. The First Symphony is almost an autobiography of Mahlers youth. Mahler, who was raised in the Moravian town of Iglau his parents were forced to move because of Emperor Josephs mobility decree, moving Jews in and out of areas at his will, was the eldest of the six Mahler children to survive infancy of a total of 14. At the time of Mahlers life Iglau was booming in the cloth trade. The town had quite a musical atmosphere on top of Bohemian folk musicians the town touted an amateur orchestra, a small opera company, and a band from the local military garrison.
