The startling thing about My Goal's Beyond is that it points the way toward two directions McLaughlin would take in the future - exploring Indian music and the acoustic guitar - and this while he was in the thick of the burgeoning electronic jazz-rock movement. My Goal's Beyond, Mahavishnu John McLaughlin, on DOUGLAS 9 Records, 1071, Goal's Beyond is the fourth solo album after Extrapolation and Devotion by John McLaughlin. The album was originally released in 1971 on Douglas Records in the US. It was later reissued by DouglasCasablanca 1976, ElektraMusician 1982, and in 1987 by Rykodisc on CD and LP. This album marks the first chronological major stylistic change from McLaughlin, apart from his move to an acoustic guitar. The music is strongly influenced by music of India, and was dedicated to McLaughlin's spiritual. My Goals Beyond is essentially two records: the first half a group session featuring Miles Davis bandmates Airto, Billy Cobham, Badal Roy, and Dave Liebman, as well as sitarist Mahalakshmi, violinist Jerry Goodman and bassist Charlie Haden the second a solo guitar collection that combines originals with the modern jazz standards Goodbye Pork-Pie Hat and Blue in Green. An excellent acoustic album from just before the Mahavishnu Orchestra days. The composition Follow your Heart is my favorite. Read more.
