The Glad Birth of Love breaks the steady solo-record routine that Cohen has established over the last several years. Rather than a smattering of scruffy psych-pop cast-offs, it's a record of long-form suites- four songs in 45 minutes. The fuzz guitars are, mostly, absent. Another change: It's billed under the name of his live backing band, Magic Trick, rather than his own. In the past, Cohen's solo material has been raw and off the cuff- a steady stream of downcast sing-alongs jammed out straight to tape and passed on to the world with minimal afterthoug. The opening track has a little of the jaunty pop sweetness weve come to expect from him, and it starts off feeling like an affectionate nod to the king of melancholic love songs, Leonard Cohen. Thats all before the 10-minute mark, where the song turns into a dreamy Middle Eastern drone. Daylight Moon is where we start to get our bearings: hushed, spooky gongs and acoustic guitars pave the way to synths and guitars dipped in so many kaleidoscopic effects that the listener feels a bit woozy. Cohens debut as Magic Trick is like pulling a sparkling, bilingual, all-knowing mega-rabbit out of a nickel-plated asshat from nowhere, and its so good you might say it takes his non-Fresh & Onlys career to a new level. Most perplexing of all is the teensy traces of past work that pop up. Not that I would expect anything different from the visioneer behind Fresh & Onlys, but The Glad Birth of Love is like hearing those early OCS recordings after being an ardent Coachwhips fan, or plugging into Edward Ka-Spels solo work after indulging in a lot of Legendary Pink Dots, or - to up the ante even more - what I imagine it was like.
