Lou Reed is an old hand at this game - when New York was released in 1989, Reed performed the album in full and in sequence each evening on tour, and he followed suit for the shows supporting 1992's Magic and Loss. But it was a collaboration with artist and director Julian Schnabel rather than anything so crass as economics that prompted Reed to revisit his 1973 concept album Berlin for a series of multimedia concerts, with Reed and his band joined by a vocal chorus including guest singers Antony and Sharon Jones and a small orchestra directed by Bob Ezrin, who arranged and produced. This is the soundtrack to a Julian Schnabel film about those performances. Lou Reed's Berlin was released in 1973, just after Transformer and just before Sally Can't Dance, two records that to this day remain Reed's most commercially successful. Thirty years later, Lou Reeds concept album about speed freaks on a downward spiral of infidelity, spousal abuse, parental neglect and death ranked 344 on this magazines 500 all-time-greatest-albums list. Reed has always fed upon this kind of irony, and in 2006 he staged a concert adaptation of his rock musical in Brooklyn. Painter-filmmaker Julian Schnabel shot the performances. Where Reed once ham-acted the part of cuckolded savage Jim on the original, he sings here with both detachment and fatherly compassion. As his career has aged, Lou Reed has posited himself as a rock n roll man of letters. In 2006, he revived his controversial 1973 concept album Berlin, with a performance at St. Anns Warehouse in Brooklyn supported by an impressive cast including guitarist Steve Hunter, bassist Fernando Saunders, vocalist Antony, cellist Jane Scarpantoni, and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. It was produced by the albums original producer Bob Ezrin and Hal Willner and filmed by Julian Schnabel. Reed had never performed the album in its entirety before, and 33 years later it becomes a cathartic revelation for all c.
