Info
Melodrama is the second studio album by New Zealand singer Lorde, released through Universal, Lava and Republic Records on 16 June 2017. A departure from the minimalist style of her debut album Pure Heroine 2013, it is a pop and electropop record incorporating piano instrumentation and maximalist electronic beats. Inspired in part by the emotions and insights gained after her breakup with longtime boyfriend James Lowe, Lorde calls Melodrama a record about being alone The good parts and the bad parts. The albums cover was painted by Brooklyn artist Sam McKinniss, who was initially approached by Lorde over the rest of his work. They became friends, and Lorde eventually commissioned McKinniss for the piece. Album 2017 11 Songs. Other Versions. 11 Songs. Music Videos. Green Light. More by Lorde. Royals Deluxe Single - Single. Green Light Chromeo Remix - Single. Magnets feat. Lorde - EP. Homemade Dynamite Remix - Single. Melodrama is the sophomore studio album by Lorde released on June 16th, 2017. Green Light , Perfect Places, Sober and Liability were announced to be singles and promotional singles from the album, respectively. Writing for the album began as early as December 2013 and continued through false starts, fruitless detours and stretches of inactivity as Lorde stepped back from the public spotlight, taking shape after her breakup from her longtime boyfriend in 2015. Melodrama is Lordes study of being a young woman finding her own conviction in unsteady circumstances. Sometimes, this also involves being single-a breakup and a raucous house party serve as thematic through-lines-but romance is only part of the albums script. Like her 2013 debut Pure Heroine, Melodrama is a work of sleek self-possession, packed with bursts of peculiar rhymes and production that confound expected song formulas. However, while Heroine cast off the trappings of materialism atop spacious trip-pop, Melodrama catches the mist off of New Wave rhythms that befit the name. Review: Lordes Melodrama Is Fantastically Intimate, a Production Tour De Force. Our take on the New Zealand divas long-awaited second LP. Now 20, Lorde signals a new order straightaway, with lonely piano chords where Pure Heroines pure electronic palette was. They open the single Green Light, a barbed message to an ex who the singer cant quite shake. The song grows into a stomping electro-acoustic thrill ride, its swarming, processed vocal chant I want it recalling another precocious, hyperliterate, synth-loving auteur singer-songwriter Kate Bush, who insisted I want it all back in 1982 on Suspended in Gaffa. Album Review: Lorde Acts Her Age on Melodrama. By Chris Willman. Chris Willman. But she was so much older then shes younger than that now. Lorde acts her age on Melodrama, the great weird-pop album 2017 has been waiting for. She spent a lot of that debut album on the outside of young life looking in, adopting a slightly scolding persona she recently wryly referred to as library girl. For this four-years-later follow-up, its not as if she just chucked all that maturity, but shes at least wandering in and out of the party, and alternating between fretful and frisky, just like any good 20-year-old should. Praise Lorde. Melodrama is the best pop album of the year so far-and suggests pop isnt what the singer-songwriter should be making at all. By Carl Wilson. June 19, 20173:36 PM. Lorde performs at Coachella on April 16 in Indio, California. Christopher PolkGetty Images for Coachella. About two-thirds of the way into the three-minute Homemade Dynamite from New Zealand pop star Lordes second album, Melodrama, theres a moment that captures both a what makes the 20-year-old Ella Yelich-OConnor such a unique and special artist and b why chart pop seems like an odd field for this particular young visionary to have. stumbled into. Lorde, the preternaturally talented New Zealand singersongwriter who became an international sensation at the age of 17, knows how to execute not only songwriting and public narrative but also a melding of the two. Melodrama, arriving nearly four long years after her 2013 debut, picks up the thread left hanging on Pure Heroine, presenting Lorde as a young woman, not a sullen teenager
