Side 1-Franz Liszt:Die IdealeSymphonic Poem-1856-part1-Side 2a-IdealeSymphonic Poem-1850-part2 & Side 2b-Franz Liszt:PrometheusSymphonic Poem-Ludovit Rajter Conducting The Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra-mono symphonic poems of the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt are a series of 13 orchestral works, numbered 107. The first 12 were composed between 1848 and 1858 though some use material conceived earlier the last, Von der Wiege bis zum Grabe From the Cradle to the Grave, followed in 1882. These works helped establish the genre of orchestral program music-compositions written to illustrate an extra-musical plan derived from a play, poem, painting or work of nature. They inspired the symphonic. By the 21st century, all of Liszt's symphonic poems are regarded as major romantic orchestral literature and each of the 10 has something unique to offer, even if we do not remember Mazeppa or Die Ideale as readily as we do Les Preludes. The Haitink cycle of Liszt's symphonic poems, recorded between 1968 and 1972, was considered state-of-the-art in terms of recording quality back then and still sound terrific on CD.
