Lee Scratch Perry born Rainford Hugh Perry, on March 20, 1936, in Kendal, Jamaica is a reggae and dub artist, who has been highly influential in the development and acceptance of reggae and dub music in Jamaica and overseas. He is sometimes known as Pipecock Jackson or The Upsetter. Career Perry's musical career began in the late 1950s as a record seller for Clement Coxsone Dodd's ska oriented sound system. This excellent two-disc set manages to cram in three old vinyl albums and seven 'lost' bonus tracks, all emanating from Perry's Black Ark studios in the late 1970s. Flushed by a deal with Island Records, he created the album, Scratch The Super Ape, its first five tracks featuring The Heptones, with female vocal trio The Full Experience stepping in towards the end. In the middle, Prince Jazzbo drops by the Ark for Croaking Lizard. The full flood of Boris Gardiner's superdubbed bass achieves primacy throughout these discs, the only other constant presence being the skittering. In Jamaica, the album was released under the name Scratch the Super Ape in July 1976 on Perry's own Upsetter label. The Jamaican version had a different track order than the international version that was released in August the same year on Island Records. The album was listed in the 1999 book The Rough Guide: Reggae: 100 Essential CDs.
