It is their first album composed of entirely original material and it represents a turning point in musical direction for the band, who had begun to record songs with more layering and production techniques. Jimmy Page's riffs rely on ringing, folky hooks as much as they do on thundering blues-rock, giving the album a lighter, more open atmosphere. The guitarist structured the song as an intricate mini-suite, contrasting bombastic slashes of suspended chords reminiscent of his 1967 Yardbirds cut Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Sailor with delicate acoustic elements. But relations became strained after the sessions for Led Zeppelin III the following year.
