Info
BBC Sessions is a compilation album featuring studio sessions and a live concert recorded by English rock group Led Zeppelin for the BBC. It was released on 11 November 1997, by Atlantic Records. Disc one consists of material from four different 1969 BBC sessions. Disc two contains most of the 1 April 1971 concert from the Paris Theatre in London. Led Zeppelin had just released their fifth album 'Houses of the Holy', they were at the top of their game and played a string of live performances that put them in the record books several times over. At the opening night in Atlanta Braves' Stadium Led Zeppelin pulled in a crowd of 49,000 which destroyed the Beatles previous record of 33,000 and grossed 246,180 for the band. But this wasn't all, the band then moved on to Tampa, Florida and played to the largest crowd that had ever gathered to a single concert performance. They broke another Beatles attendance record 55,000 at Shea, drew 57,000 to the event and grossed 309 000. Photographer Jorgen Angel was present at Led Zeppelin's first concert, in 1968. Photographer Jorgen Angel documented Led Zeppelin's first concert, on 7 September 1968, capturing unique images of the band. Image copyright Jorgen Angel. The photos form part of a new book that features famous pictures from the concert, along with photos never seen before. The Complete BBC Sessions, an updated and newly remastered version with eight unreleased BBC recordings and including three rescued from a previously Zeppelin's BBC sessions were among the most popular bootleg items of the rock & roll era, appearing on a myriad of illegal records and CDs. They were all the more popular because of the lack of official Led Zeppelin live albums, especially since The Song Remains the Same failed to capture the essence of the band. For anyone who hadn't heard the recordings, the mystique of Zeppelin's BBC sessions was somewhat mystifying, but the official 1997 release of the double-disc BBC Sessions offered revelations for any fan who hadn't yet heard this music. If the 1969 sessions were Zeppelin figuring out who they were, the 1971 sessions were Led Zeppelin figuring out who they werent. Broadcast on BBC Radio Ones In Concert on April 4, 1971, and famously featuring the first-ever version of Stairway to Heaven eight months before the release of Led Zeppelin IV, the second disc features the band stepping into the vast musical expanse they had laid before themselves. III was released the previous October and was their first shot at pushing beyond their blooze rep to more vivid folk influences. On June 29th, 1969, the British DJ John Peel opened Top Gear, his progressive-rock program on the BBCs Radio One, by spinning the Rolling Stones new single Honky Tonk Women. Peel then introduced the first number from a four-song studio session by a rising young band, still less than a year old. These are Led Zeppelin, Peel announced in his hypnotizing monotone, who played very excellently at the amazing festival in Bath yesterday, about which more later on. And this is curious.
