Info
Cirkus: The Young Persons' Guide to King Crimson Live is a live album compilation from King Crimson. It was released in 1999 through Virgin Records. Tracks 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9 & 10 recorded at the Metropolitan Theatre, Mexico City, 24 August 1996. Tracks 2, 13 & 14 recorded at the Spectrum, Montreal 11 July 1984. Tracks 8 & 15 recorded at Nakano Sun Plaza, Tokyo, 56 October 1995. Track 6 recorded at the Jazz Cafe, London, 1 December 1997. Pay attention now: whereas 1998's Absent Lovers also a two-disc live album documented King Crimson's 1984 tour in support of Three of a Perfect Pair, the last album the band made before taking a ten-year break, Cirkus includes live material spanning the band's entire career, from its earliest 1969 lineup to its later double-trio configuration. This is The Young Person's Guide to King Crimson Live, so have a seat, relax and enjoy the music. Ironically, the first CD does not feature old line-ups songs, so it is not a strictly chronological album. Here, we can appreciate songs from the Belew era, with Levin, Mastelotto and company, taken from shows performed from 1984-1998 in places such as Mexico, Canada, Japan and USA. Getting to know King Crimson's studio album catalog is one of the most rewarding goals a progressive rock fan can pursue, but you need to be open to a lot of different dynamics and musical styles to fully appreciate it. King Crimson - Thela Hun Ginjeet. King Crimson - Red. King Crimson said it was alright to create music that didn't have an instantly hummable melody. This made them sometimes difficult to listen to, but a little patience will reveal many musical pleasures. The great thing about listening to King Crimson live is that they strike a perfect balance between tightly written well-structured songs and improvisational looseness. The album sleeve will take you through the various band line ups and the CD will take you on a journey of King Crimson live throughout the years. A great offering at a reasonable price. If like me you were a fan early on and now you are catching up on the later stuff then this is an excellent place to start.
