Kinderkoor Jacob Hamel emerged from the AVRO's Kinderkoor and is named after conductor Jacob Hamel. In 1929 the AVRO's Kinderkoor was formed under the leadership of Jacob Hamel 1883-1943. In May 1940, immediately after the German occupation, the Jewish Jacob Hamel was fired. During World War II Hamel was killed in Sobibor. Drie jaar later, op 6 juli 1943, werd Hamel met zijn vrouw Jeannette Hamel-Cohen vanuit Westerbork weggevoerd naar het vernietigingskamp Sobibór in Polen, waar zij op 9 juli aankwamen en dezelfde dag werden vermoord.
