For years, the music of Sweden, Norway and Iceland has been enchanting American audiences. Originally released in Europe in 2001, the groups debut Heartcore was recorded when Kiila was only a duo, though theyve since expanded. Here, however, the duo sounds, well, more or less like two guys making stuff at home on a 4-track. But I mean that in the most positive way. Heartcore is charmingly simple and stripped down, quirky and imperfect, but endearing all the same. And despite its lo-fi, playful nature, its a surprisingly diverse album, few songs actually sounding anything like one another. This first Kiila album, Heartcore was originally recorded and released in 2001, when the band was still duo. It features the compositions of Sami Sanpakkila, Fonal Records founder who has released records under the moniker Es, and Niko-Matti Ahti. The language of the songs moves from English to Finnish, and the human voices rest on a warm texture of sounds from an array of acoustic and electronic instruments.
