Info
Theres not another record on the. Drum Dance is a white-hot ride through scorched, microtonal clarinet whines and tumbling percussion that eventually gives way to a more playful marimba solo from Jamal. Harsh though its front-end may be, Drum Dance exudes joy throughout its 12-plus-minute runtime. In its opening moments you can hear a member of the band clapping enthusiastically and encouraging the audience to join along. Inner Peace, meanwhile, goes in a more bluesey direction. Recorded originally in 1972, DRUM DANCE TO THE MOTHERLAND showcases the left-leaning aesthetic of avant jazz vibraphonist Khan Jamal. At once fractured, fluid, and expressionistic, with a strong tribal element thanks in large part to the African-style drumming, the transcendent intentions of Jamals musical universe are clear, a feeling reinforced by song titles like Cosmic Echoes and Inner Peace. Khan Jamal's vibes, marimba and clarinet also find their way into the dub, but less obviously than the drums, which points to listening to the actual mix live and improvising with that. Billy Mills' bass work slides in and out of the listening range in the flurry, showing up more when he plays electric, and when that happens, the spooky Miles grooves emerge. One of the real standouts on this work is Monette Sudler one of the only, if not the only woman playing guitar in the Black Art Music scene or any jazz scene back then. Her solid jazz sound sometimes seems at odds with the vib. There's not another album on the planet that sounds even remotely like vibraphonist Khan Jamal's eccentric, one-of-a-kind masterpiece, Drumdance to the Motherland. Comparisons to Sun Ra, King Tubby, Phil Cohran, and BYGActuel merely hint at the cosmic otherness conjured by the band and by recording engineer Mario Falana&a.
