It's been 10 years since LATENIGHT DAYDREAMING, and I'm afraid that it might mark the end of Karma's output, which is a pity, since they seemed to be going in a new direction with this album. Indeed, this album shows them leaning more towards a folksy sound - though still filtered through their downtempo vision. The opener, All You Ever Wanted, starts with a simple strumming before the other instruments and Jerome Stokes' vocals layer in with harmonic precision. As one might expect from the album title, Karma's Late Night Daydreaming is a mellow, after-midnight blend of pretty, atmospheric piano-based instrumentals and downtempo R&B tunes. As the title suggests, there's no bangin' techno on Latenight Dreaming. In fact, fans of Lars Dorsch and Tom Dams like Moodyman and Theo Parish are going to be taken aback by their latest album. The publicity blurb proclaims that they take their inspiration from Antonio Carlos Jobim, Carole King, Hall & Oates, Brian Wilson, Lovin' Spoonful, Creed Taylor, Marcos Valle, the Zombies, Jay Dilla, Terry Callier, Linda Lewis and SoundtrackLibrary music, amongst a host of others

It's been 10 years since LATENIGHT DAYDREAMING, and I'm afraid that it might mark the end of Karma's output, which is a pity, since they seemed to be going in a new direction with this album. Indeed, this album shows them leaning more towards a folksy sound -- though still filtered through their downtempo vision. The opener, "All You Ever Wanted," starts with a simple strumming before the other instruments and Jerome Stokes' vocals layer in with harmonic precision. But it's the tenderness of "Are We?" that shines even brighter, carried by Michelle Amador's melting vocals, followed close behind by the drifting insturmental "Carte Blanche." The folk vibe returns on the sunny, inspirational "Fly" and the warm feeling of "Home." The simplicity of "Beach Towel" belies its beauty. Some R&B soul creeps onto "Father, Father," but it's quickly back to the bliss with "Shoreline Drive" and the cinematic piano-and-strings of "Sleeping Beauty." This mood carries into the stately closing "Requiem/All & Everything In Between," which, I suppose, is a lovely enough way to cap a musical career if need be.
