Karl Gerhard was born the 12th of April 1891, and was baptized in the name of Karl Emil Georg Johnson. He later changed it to Karl Emil Gerhard Johnson and used Gerhard Johnson as a form of artistic name. A few years later, by proposistion of a fellow artist, he started to use Karl-Gerhard, and a few years from that he wrote to the King of Sweden to get permission to make Gerhard his surname. The permission was granted, and Karl Gerhard wore his new name until his death, the 22nd of April, 1964. Gerhard was in first hand a revue-artist. Karl Emil Georg Gerhard, until 1938 Karl Emil Georg Johnson 14 April 1891 22 April 1964 was a Swedish theater director, revue writer and actor. In 1938 he changed his surname to Gerhard and used the pseudonym Karl-Gerhard. Karl Emil Georg Johnson was born in Hedvig Eleonora parish in Stockholm, Sweden. He was the son of Frans Emil Jonsson 18611917 and Jenny Augusta Jonsdotter 18631906. In 1916, he appeared as an actor under the direction of Hjalmar Selander at the Nya Teatern in Gothenburg.
