Featured in a trio with bassist Jimmy Woode and drummer Bobby Durham, Mance performs a wide-ranging set that includes a few originals, blues, and standards including Broadway, Lady Bird and the title cut that he practically turns into the blues. JUNIOR MANCE, born Julian Clifford Mance, Jr. in Chicago, Illinois on October 10, 1928 is a jazz pianist, composer, author of HOW TO PLAY BLUES PIANO, and recording artist of thirty plus albums as a leader and numerous recordings as a sideman. Junior began playing the piano at the age of five, but did not begin formal training until the age of eight. He started playing professionally during his early teens. He attended Roosevelt College in Chicago as a music major. In 1947 Junior left Roosevelt College to join Gene Ammons' band and began his recording career wi read more. Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise is a song with music by Sigmund Romberg and Oscar Hammerstein II from the 1928 operetta The New Moon. One of the best-known numbers from the show, it is a song of bitterness and yearning for a lost love, sung in the show by Philippe tenor, the best friend of the hero, Robert Mission baritone. The original song was composed as a tango, and features a dance as accompaniment to the choral reprise, but many versions of the song have changed the tempo completely there.
