Info
Other than two obscure efforts in 1964 and 1969, tenor saxophonist J. Monterose had not led an album in nearly 20 years when he made this LP for the Uptown label in 1979. Teamed up with pianist Hod O'Brien, bassist Teddy Kotick and drummer Eddie Robinson, Monterose does his best, although he does sound a bit rusty in spots. He stretches out on long versions of three jazz standards The Shadow of Your Smile, Ruby My Dear and Just Friends and his own Lu-an. Live In Albany is a hard bop music live album recording by J R MONTEROSE released in 1980 on CD, LPVinyl andor cassette. J R MONTEROSE - Live In Albany. Monterose recorded in 1956 and released on the Blue Note label. Monterose's first session as a leader was a thoroughly enjoyable set of swinging, straight-ahead bop that revealed him as a saxophonist with a knack for powerful, robust leads in the vein of Sonny Rollins and Coleman Hawkins. Monterose has a rich and assertive tone, nice and brassy and influenced by the beefy sounds of Coleman Hawkins and Chu Berry with a hint of left-of center and a dash of early Coltrane. This well recorded gig has Montrose and company gliding through a lusciously swinging The Shadow of Your Smile and Just Friends which both allow OBrien and Kotick to stretch out a tad as well.
