Schley starts out slower and then gradually builds on the skeletal beginnings of drums and vocals until the explosive last thirty seconds, while End of the Summer begins with an angular lead guitar that gives way to the audible bass that dominates most of the album. The construction of the songs on Never Hungover Again is a bit like a sampler platter, as it displays the gamut of everything that Joyce Manor can do, and it does. The successes of Never Hungover Again are numerous, and the foremost is how Joyce Manor's most ambitious and diverse album is just like their other ones-10 songs, 19 minutes, every second as weird as it is instantly enjoyable. Assuming youre approaching this record as a self-identifying indie rock fan, there isnt a single legitimate precedent that will walk you through this-maybe west coast Lifetime comes close, considering Barry Johnsons perpetual slur, self-deprecation, and goofy earnestness.
