The frontman for Azymuth goes solo on <I>Things Are Different</I>, but really, things aren’t that much different. There’s still plenty of smooth jazz, with some Brazilian twists thrown in. Bertrami obviously favors the traditional jam-band jazz instruments: Hammond organ, brass, gentle-plucked guitar -- all throughout, you hear those unmistakable strains. The edges of this album have been smoothed off for a pleasant, easy-to-swallow experience. There aren’t any jarring shocks and, conversely, no surprises either. Instead, you get the mellow horns on “Partido Alto No. 3” or the lazy day tones of “Dificil Te Dizer.” Everything might be a little too nice; this album –- to its detriment -- wouldn’t be out of place on the playlist of a lite jazz FM station. But if you enjoy that, there’s no reason why you wouldn’t like this.
