Joseph Haydn wrote as many as 123 trios for the unusual combination of baryton, viola and cello, and three further trios for baryton, cello and violin Hob. XI:89-91 are considered part of the series. As Sisman notes, they are the most intensively cultivated genre of Haydns early career. The baryton is a bowed string instrument of the viol family played in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. It has six or seven strings of gut, arranged over a fretted fingerboard, plus a lower set of wire. Franz Joseph Haydn 1732-1809 wrote almost 200 compositions for the baryton. The instrument was a favorite of Haydn's patron and employer, Prince Nicolas Esterhazy and one of Haydn's tasks was to produce a continual output of chamber music that the good Prince could play on his own baryton. The baryton is a strange and almost defunct instrument - it has been described as a cross between a cello and a harp. Nevertheless, Haydn's Prince apparently enjoyed playing it very much and was known to reprimand Haydn when he did not produce sufficient works to meet the Prince's desires. Haydn's baryton trios are full of the same beautiful, and occasionally witty, melodies as his other music, but the sound is unlike anything else I've ever heard. The reason is that these trios are played by a baryton which sounds similar to a cello or viola da gamba, a viola, and a cello as a result, the overall sound is deeper, richer, and more mellow than chamber music including violins or other higher-pitched instruments. I like cello stuff and Viola de Gamba pieces. This reminds me of the Viola de Gamba a lot. A very nice disc.
