A Tábua De Esmeralda is the 11th studio album by Brazilian singer-songwriter and guitarist Jorge Ben. It was released in 1974 by Philips Records. The album showcases Ben's interest in theosophy, mysticism, and, above all, alchemy. Its title refers to the Emerald Tablet, a cryptic piece of Hermetica reputed to contain the secret of the prima materia and its transmutation and its artwork incorporates drawings from Nicholas Flamel, who was historically immortalized as a great alchemist for his work on. A Tábua de Esmeralda together with Jorge Ben's 1976 album África Brasil could be said to represent the creative culmination of his astonishing '70s. The music that Ben recorded during this period had tremendous influence on Brazilian musicians at that time and to a great extent helped to ignite the creative explosion that took place in the Brazilian samba rock and samba soul scenes during the '70s. The sound on this particular album is very simple, with the songs being driven by Ben's characteristic acoustic guitar playing together with a bass guitar and percussion. Jorge Bens passionate singing coupled with soft female backing vocals and almost indigenous-like sounding music behind them gives the song a truly genuine and soothing vibe. The magic of the album is primarily created by Jorge Bens vocals and his guitar. All in all, A Tabua de Esmeralda is a very pleasant and uplifting listen. It is an album which is bound to make you feel better, whether you were feeling down or were already having a great day. It doesnt matter, it works anytime.
