For the Roses is the fifth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, released in November 1972, between her two biggest commercial and critical successes Blue and Court and Spark. Despite this, in 2007 it was one of 25 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. A highly influential artist, she has received eight Grammy Awards during her career, with the first coming in 1969 and the most recent in 2008. On For the Roses, Joni Mitchell began to explore jazz and other influences in earnest. As one might expect from a transitional album, there is a lot of stylistic ground explored, including straight folk selections using guitar For the Roses and piano Banquet, See You Sometime, Lesson in Survival overtly jazzy numbers Barangrill, Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire, and hybrids that cross the two Let the Wind. Another transitional record - this is Mitchell broadening her palette. Jazzy wind instruments are woven into the fabric of the songs, not just tacked on for codas multitracked vocal choruses grow more intricate James Burton adds swampy electric guitar. As the Sixties receded, the songs glint with jadedness. Few fame interrogations cut as deep as the title track, or with as cool an eye as Blonde in the Bleachers. Not my favourite Joni album, but still head and shoulders above everyone else. After 'Roses', Joni's range widened. The follow-up, Court and Spark, saw the introduction of jazz inflections that increasingly permeated the rest of her seventies albums, in the company of legends like Jaco Pastorius and Herbie Hancock. But Roses is a hint of things to comes, with more orchestration, and a darker edge. Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire points the way. And, by the way, Joni was doing Anglo-Saxon expletives way before Shaun Ryder. For the Roses was Joni Mitchells first release after her commercial and critical breakthrough album, Blue. Searching for balance in her life after a tumultuous relationship with James Taylor and trying to escape the craziness of Los Angeles, Joni trekked back up to Canada, bought herself a piece of land and wrote most of these songs while in retreat. The album is a transitional project in Mitchells canon, going from her folk roots to some new jazz experimentations.
