Pictures in a Gallery, an obvious homage to Mussorgsky, is a set of 12 improvisations inspired by paintings of Picasso, Cézanne, Kandinsky, Miró, and Klee performed by composer and pianist John Wolf Brennan at a museum in Lucerne in 2002. The disc is filled out with other improvisations, including a set based on a poem by Pushkin. The improvisations are notable for their high energy and the complexity and diversity of their rhythms. Brennan was born in Dublin, his family moved to Switzerland when he was seven years old. He took piano lessons from age eleven, but played bass guitar in a rock band in 1970 before returning to keyboards in 1974 to play in a jazz-rock group.
