John Edmund Andrew Phillips August 30, 1935 March 18, 2001 was an American singer, guitarist, songwriter, and promoter. He is famous as a member and leader of the vocal group The Mamas & the Papas, and for his role in organizing the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Phillips was born August 30, 1935, in Parris Island, South Carolina. His father, Claude Andrew Phillips, was a retired United States Marine Corps officer.
