This album was recorded at Cinderella Studios, Madison, Tennessee. It was recorded direct to two-track on a Scully analog tape recorder at 30 ips with dbx noise reduction. The microphones used were a Sennheiser 451 and a Telefunken U-87 for the banjo and guitar, Telefunken U-67's for the vocals and violin, and Shure 545's for the feet. Reverberation effects via EMT plates. The vocals were limited with dbx 160 compressor/limiters.

From the time he got his first job on the river, at age 16, Hartford was on, around, or singing about the river. John changed his last name to Hartford later in life at the behest of Chet Atkins.
