Info
The Lady's Not for Burning is a 1948 play by Christopher Fry. A romantic comedy in three acts, in verse, it is set in the Middle Ages 1400, either more or less or exactly. It reflects the world's exhaustion and despair following World War II, with a war-weary soldier who wants to die, and an accused witch who wants to live. In form, it resembles Shakespeare's pastoral comedies. Starring John Gielgud as Thomas Mendip Pamela Brown as Jennet Jourdemayne Richard Burton as Richard. The first West End production, which transferred to Broadway the following year, starred John Gielgud as Thomas, Pamela Brown as Jennet, and Claire Bloom and Richard Burton as the young lovers Alizon and Richard. This play contains examples of: Arranged Marriage: Alizon's parents have arranged for her to marry Humphrey, the mayor's nephew. When she arrives at the beginning of the play to prepare for the wedding, she mentions that she's only met Humphrey once. Burn the Witch: What Jennet is threatened with. John Gielgud. The Lady. Boy's Life novel. In the 1950s Gielgud feared that his career was threatened when he was convicted and fined for a homosexual offence, but his colleagues and the public supported him loyally. When avant-garde plays began to supersede traditional West End productions in the later 1950s he found no new suitable stage roles, and for several years he was best known in the theatre for his one-man Shakespeare show, The Ages of Man. From the late 1960s he found new plays that suited him, by authors including Alan Bennett, David Storey and Harold Pinter. Read more
