Info
The John Coltrane Quartet Plays full title The John Coltrane Quartet Plays Chim Chim Cheree, Song of Praise, Nature Boy, Brazilia is an album by jazz musician John Coltrane, recorded in February and May of 1965, shortly after the release of A Love Supreme. The tracks recorded in February feature two bass players Jimmy Garrison and Art Davis, and are a continuation of experiments begun by Coltrane in 1961 involving multiple basses, often with one playing arco and the other playing pizzicato. One of the turning points in the career of John Coltrane came in 1965. The great saxophonist, whose playing was always very explorative and searching, crossed the line into atonality during that year, playing very free improvisations after stating quick throwaway themes that were full of passion and fury. It should come as no surprise that Do Re Mi, with it's movement through all the notes of the scale, is perfectly suited to the explorations that Coltrane was attempting at the time. Goodbye Farewell had an interesting origin on the stage. Coltrane and company would reenact the scene from the movie, with Coltrane kicking both Tyner and Garrison in the seat of the pants to send them off the stage. They then launch into a furious drum and tenor saxophone exchange on Climb Ev'ry Mountain. However, the real draw is sure to be the new version of My Favorite Things, which features Wes Montgomery on guitar
