Info

Ascension is a jazz album by John Coltrane recorded in 1965 and released in 1966. It is often considered a watershed in Coltrane's work, with the albums recorded before it being more conventional in structure and the albums recorded after it being looser, free jazz inspired works. In addition, it signaled Coltrane's interest in moving away from the quartet format. Coltrane described Ascension in a radio interview as a big band thing, although it resembles no big band recording made before it. Whereas, prior to 1965, Coltrane could be heard playing in an avant vein with stretched-out solos, atonality, and a seemingly free design to the beat, Ascension throws most rules right out the window with complete freedom from the groove and strikingly abrasive sheets of horn interplay. Due to its very nature, it is probably the most polarizing album in the Coltrane discography, and could be the best thing you've ever heard just as likely as being the worst. It is often considered to be a watershed album, with the albums released before it being more conventional in structure and the albums released after it being looser, free jazz inspired works. For the record, while Ascension on its own is a highly recommended release, if you can find the double-album Major Works of John Coltrane which contains both takes of Ascension, as well as other key free-jazz items Om, Kulu Se Mama and Selflessness, buy that instead. Not to detract from the music here though, which is excellent. I can appreciate the artistry behind this album, but this was literally just a clusterfuck of obnoxious noisy instrumentation. If youre into the avant-garde and feel sorry for those who cant get this album, then good for you. Personally, I was more annoyed by this than anything. 9mo. Or consider a donation
