Info

Church of Anthrax is a collaborative studio album by musicians John Cale and Terry Riley. It was released in February 1971 by record label Columbia, nearly a year after the material was recorded in fact, it was recorded prior to Cale's solo debut Vintage Violence. The Soul of Patrick Lee is the only vocal track on the album all others are instrumentals. No singles were taken from the album. Though Cale was trained in a similar aesthetic he played with La Monte Young, surely the most minimal of all minimalist composers, he had largely left it behind by 1971, and so Church of Anthrax mixes Riley's drones and patterns with a more muscular and melodic bent versed in both free jazz and experimental rock. Church of Anthrax is a collaboration between John Cale and Terry Riley, who had worked together in New York in the Sixties, as documented on Cale's 2000 archive release Stainless Steel Gamelan. Collaboration between John Cale, who had recently left The Velvet Underground, and modernist orchestral composer Terry Riley. They had both previously worked with avant-garde composer La Monte Young, who specialised in drone based music. This album is mostly composed of improvised instrumental music with a surprisingly heavy and upbeat edge. Four of the songs are instrumentals written by both artists. The Soul of Patrick Lee is writ. But Terry Riley and John Cale. You haven't heard real music until you've heard this album or at least one of there other great solo works. Rispondi Avvertimi 1 Helpful. Only for completionists 2. A stunning second album, this Church Of Anthrax is easily Cale's top achievement in his career, even if this is just another album for Terry Riley. Let me explain before you hurl a bunch of insults at me. According to Cale he dug out the funk hidden in Riley's hypnotic patterns of organ and soprano saxophone. Whatever, this unique fusion of minimalism, experimental rock and free jazz is not as hard to digest as one could expect. Thursday, 16 January 2020.
