James Corbitt Morris June 20, 1907 July 12, 1998, known professionally as Jimmy Driftwood or Jimmie Driftwood, was an American folk music songwriter and musician, most famous for his songs The Battle of New Orleans and Tennessee Stud. Driftwood wrote more than 6,000 folk songs, of which more than 300 were recorded by various musicians. Driftwood was born in Timbo, Arkansas, United States on June 20, 1907. His father was folk singer Neil Morris. He is on the album Songs of the Ozarks. Jimmie Driftwood listed as Jimmy on this album is a well-kept secret in country music - he wasn't much of a hitmaker in his own right but he wrote several well-known songs, including the trend-setting historical smash hit The Battle of New Orleans. Driftwood was a serious historian and song collector with an utterly unique style who recorded several excellent albums for Columbia in the 1950s.
