Written in the aftermath of his longtime producer Leslie Kong's tragically early death, 1972's Struggling Man reflected Jimmy Cliff's desperate attempt to shake himself out of mourning and find a new career path. And it really was a struggle. Cliff had spent virtually his entire career with Kong, joining his Beverley's label in 1962, when he was only 14. Without Kong by his side, the singer was at a paralyzing loss, a state also reflected by his single Sitting in Limbo. I've been listening to Jimmy Cliff since 1973, when I was 10 years old. I think Struggling Man is his best album. I don't know anything about the history of it, but I can't help thinking that if it had been properly promoted and distributed it would have done really well. Almost every song could have been a hit. This is an amazing album. Every song is so catchy almost to a fault But I don't feel they are so catchy just trying to be pop. They are genuine Cliff originals with him at the best of his form.
