While it's really great to hear how The Jimi Hendrix Experience were going about "shaping" their ideas into the finished album, Axis Bold As Love, it remains really nothing more than a load of rough sketches so similar to the originals, that you'd be better of with the album. Just to elaborate on that... The ideas contained and captured on tape during these outtakes themselves are not so much variations on the theme as they are almost exact copies preceding the final takes... It is like Hendrix, Mitchell and Redding had already finalized the way it was going to play in their heads, and were merely trying to get it spot on. While there is obviously nothing wrong with this way of writing music (in fact it actually shows how good they were at getting that finished diamond in their minds eye and then onto tape with as few takes as possible, AND so not much experimentation), it doesn't really provide very interesting listening, in my very humble opinion. Just to top this "slander" off... While the tapes that these outtakes were salvaged from must be very old, the "hiss" on some of the tracks is almost unbearable. What with the modern techniques of cleaning up tape hiss now-a-days, it's quite lame that this wasn't done... At times it's almost a though there is an angry snake in the studio with them during recording!? Still... Having said all that, it's nice to hear Hendrix from time to time flunk a chord or two while polishing their sound. Sort of brings his almost "god" like status back into the human domain. Also, to hear tracks like Takin' Care Of No Business, South Saturn Delta (with its weird as panning on the drum solos), the weird as Cat Talkin' To Me and The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam's Dice (to name but a few), all of which are done in such a raw way, is actually quite satisfying, despite the dull mixing of the tape tracks... While this release isn't revealing any ground breaking stuff, it has some interesting moments that would be of interest to the avid Experience fan so that they might peer behind the workings of a truly revolutionary band...
