Info
Viva Terlingua is a live progressive country album by Jerry Jeff Walker and The Lost Gonzo Band recorded August 18, 1973 at the Luckenbach Dancehall in Luckenbach, Texas, and released later that year on MCA Nashville Records. The album excellently captures Walker's strived-for gonzo country sound, a laid-back country base with notes of outlaw rock, blues, and traditional Mexican norteño and Tejano styles. Jerry Jeff Walker has never been one to do what he was supposed to do. A military dropout who scored a Top 10 hit in writing Mr. Bojangles, he left New York City for Austin, Texas, long before it was known as the Live Music Capitol of the World. And in the summer of 1973, Walker cut an LP, Viva Terlingua, that helped lay the foundation for the outlaw country sub-genre of country music. We had an independent record and we used it to the nth degree. Viva Terlingua, recorded live in Luckenbach, TX, on a hot August night in 1973, is among the most legendary of live singersongwriter albums ever released. It's the Live at the Fillmore East of redneck Texas folk-rock. Essentially, it's Jerry Jeff fronting the Lost Gonzo Band at the beginning of their long run together playing, living it up, having a ball, giving everybody the impression that life was a party, and to be sure, it was for a while. Of the four Jerry Jeff Walker albums that I own on vinyl, this is hands-down my favorite. My love for this album is very strongly tied to the memories of 2-and 3-week family road trips while growing up, so I have a particular bias. But, seriously, every song is fun to sing along to. Viva Terlingua came out in the '70s country cross-over music surge, but this music-This Texas Music-has a life of its own transcending genres and decades. Read more. 4 people found this helpful.
