As the oldest Chanson de Geste, the Chanson de Roland is generally dated in the early 12th century ca. 1100-1120 and traces back to an historical event. In this epic two characters stand out: Charlemagne, king of the Franks, and Roland, his nephew and most prominent adviser and knight, who is the epitome of Christian heroism and sacrifice and who accepts martyrdom on the battlefield against the enemies of Christianity.
