Info
Officium is an album by Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek and early music vocal group the Hilliard Ensemble, that was released in 1994. The album was recorded at the monastery of Propstei St. Gerold in Austria. The album starts and ends with music by the sixteenth-century Spanish composer Cristobal de Morales. Ginell states: Recorded in a heavily reverberant Austrian monastery, the voices sometimes develop in overwhelming waves. Fearlessly searching for new conceptions of sound and not caring where he found them, Garbarek joined hands with the classical early-music movement, improvising around the four male voices of the Hilliard Ensemble. Now here was a radical idea guaranteed to infuriate both hardcore jazz buffs and the even more pristine more-authentic-than-thou folk in early music circles. Officium Novum. For most of the album Garbarek adds a pleasant, unobtrusive shine to the music: unobtrusive is crucial, because the music can survive without him. If he gets too active - he does a couple of times in the latter part of the album, I feel - he draws too much attention to himself, detracting from the beauty of the original music. If you are unfamiliar with Garbarek, you should know that he's not jazz in the way most people think of jazz. Complete your Jan Garbarek, The Hilliard Ensemble collection.
